Key Verse: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.’ So I am very happy to brag about how weak I am. Then Christ’s power can rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

OPENING PRAYER

THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN

Simply ask your child to share one good thing that happened today or this week (thumbs up) and one not-so-good thing (thumbs down). This is a great way to share celebrations and struggles with one another.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story?

    • How do you think Paul felt when he finally reached land? Why do you think that?

  • For older kids:

    • If God can stop storms, why do you think He didn’t stop the storm that Paul was in?

    • If Paul was doing all of this for God, do you think God should have made it easier for Paul? Why or why not?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God. Thank Him for doing BIG things through you when you feel weak.

    • Journal Station prompt: Write a letter to God and tell Him about one of your worst days ever. Can you think of something good that God did through that day? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Acts 27. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: What do you look like when you’re having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? Draw a picture of it. While you’re drawing, ask God to give you strength when you feel weak.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Strength in Weakness (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: Provide each small group with two equally-sized stacks of books or Bibles. When stacked, the books or Bibles need only be a few inches high. As a substitute, you could also use two equally-sized chairs.
  • Say: In today’s story, Paul had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. In fact, he had a bunch of days like that—days that made Paul feel weak. But Paul rejoiced in his weakness, because that allowed God to be strong. We’re going to do an activity right now that will help us see how God makes us strong when bad things happen to us.
  • Directions: Set two equally-sized stacks of books in the middle of the group with about 8 inches between them. Provide the kids with a single piece of paper and an empty plastic cup and give them the following challenge: use the paper to create a bridge that is strong enough to hold up the cup. They may not move the books closer together or use any other objects to assist. Allow the kids to problem solve and to experiment with different solutions. When enough time has passed or the kids have given up, tell them that you will show them the solution, but first they have to answer a question. Ask the kids to tell you about something bad that has happened to them. Each time a kid shares, fold the paper long-ways so that it eventually looks like a paper fan. (Each fold should be about an inch apart for a total of 7 folds.) When you’ve finished your 7th and final fold, set the accordion shaped paper across the books and place the cup on top (see picture below.) The paper will be strong enough to hold the cup up.
  • Say: If this paper hadn’t been bent out of shape, it wouldn’t be so strong. That’s kind of like us. When bad things happen, we can get all bent out of shape. It’s no fun and it doesn’t feel so good either, but that’s when God shows His strength. For example, if you got made fun of at school, God might use that situation to help you stand up for other kids who get made fun of. If your grandma died, God might use that situation to help you comfort a friend when they lose a grandparent.
  • Question: Think about each of those bad things you shared. How could God make you better or stronger through that situation? Is there something good that God could do through that bad thing?

+ Picture This Bible Verse (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: “Picture This” Bible verse cards and markers
  • Directions: Place the “Picture This” Bible verse cards in the center of your group. Each card will contain a part of the verse. Have the kids arrange the cards in the correct order. For younger kids who are still learning to read, you may have to assist them with this. Today’s Bible verse is: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.’ So I am very happy to brag about how weak I am. Then Christ’s power can rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9. Tell the kids that they’re going to replace each part of the verse with a picture. Begin by reading the words on the first card and asking your group if they can think of a picture that represents those words. Choose one of the kids to flip the card over and draw that picture on the back. Continue this for each of the cards. When finished, once again place all of the cards in order on the floor with the words facing up. Begin by reading the verse together. For younger kids, they can listen to you reading the verse a couple of times before they begin to join in. Choose a kid to flip one of the cards over so that the picture is facing up. Recite the verse again. Continue having kids flip over cards and recite the verse until all of the words have been replaced with pictures. When your group is able to recite the verse using only the pictures, have them begin removing one card at a time. Each time you remove a card, recite the verse. Continue doing this until all of the cards are removed and the kids can recite the entire verse from memory.
  • Question: Imagine if nothing bad ever happened to you. How would you be different? Would that make you a stronger person or a weaker person? Why?

+ What's in your Heart? (Prayer Activity)

  • Directions: Today we learned that God’s power is strongest when we are weak. So we can learn to trust Him and rely on His power inside of us to make those weak moments powerful in our lives. Today we're going to take some time to draw a heart on a piece of paper and write inside it a characteristic we need more of in our life this week. (Example: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, or self-control) Then on the other side of the paper, we are going to write down something we need God to help us stop focusing on this week. Then draw a big X through it. (Example: jealousy, selfishness, anger) Allow everyone to share their thoughts verbally. When finished, open the group in prayer. Allow any kid who would like to pray aloud to do so. Have the kids tuck their slip of paper in their pocket or Bible so they can remember this week.

May 16, 2021 - Lesson 2: Timothy is Chosen

Big Idea: God can do BIG things through you even though you’re young.

Bible Basis: Acts 16:1–3; 1 Timothy 4:11–12

Key Verse: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

    • Do you think you are too young to do what Timothy did? Why or why not?

  • For older kids:

    • How old do you think you should be before you do something like Timothy did? Why?

    • What kind of things could God do through a kid your age?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God and thank Him for giving you a big job to do even though you’re young. Ask Him to help you be a good example to others.

    • Journal Station prompt: Do you ever struggle to be a good example to others in your words, actions, love, faith, or purity? Write a letter to God and tell Him about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Acts 15:36–41; 16:1–3. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: What can you do to set a good example for other Christians? Draw a picture of it.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Fishing Frenzy (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: For each small group, print the “Fishing Frenzy” cards on 8½ x 11 cardstock and cut apart. Stick a small adhesive magnet (or tape a small magnet) to the back of each card. For each kid, cut a 5 foot (1.5 meter) piece of string. Tie a paper clip to one end of each string.
  • Say: In the Book of 1 Timothy, Paul told Timothy, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” We’re going to play a game right now that will help us think about how we can be an example to others in all of those different ways.
  • Directions: Have your group sit in a large circle. Each of the kids should be about 5 feet from the center of the circle for a total diameter of about 10 feet. Divide the group into two equal teams. Half of the circle will be on one team, the other half will be on the other team. Place the “Fishing Frenzy” cards face down (magnet up) in the middle of the circle. Give each kid a piece of string with a paper clip tied to one end. On “go,” without leaning forward, have the kids hold one end of their string while tossing the paperclip at the magnets in the middle. When someone has “caught” and reeled in a card, stop the round. Have the kid flip the card over and reveal what’s on it. If it’s one of the 5 icon cards, give that team a point. Read the description and question on the card, then discuss with the kids. (See below for the icon list along with questions.) Encourage the kids to be specific with their answers. If it’s one of the 2 physical challenge cards, have the team perform a physical challenge, then give them a point. If it’s the “Zonk” card, take a point away. Continue playing rounds until all cards have been reeled in. Add the points up and announce a winner at the end.
  • Fishing Frenzy Icons:
    • Speech Bubble: You can be an example through your speech. Let your words be appropriate, truthful, and kind. How could you be a better example through your speech this coming week?
    • Hand: You can be an example through your conduct. Let your actions show that you love and follow Jesus. How could you be a better example through your actions or behavior this coming week?
    • Heart: You can be an example through the way you love. Show love to everyone, even people who are hard to love. How could you be a better example by showing love to others this coming week? Who do you need to show more love to?
    • Cross: You can be an example through your faith. Read your Bible and spend time praying to God every day. How could you be a better example through your faith this coming week? What are you going to do to spend time with God and show Him that you love Him?
    • Stop Sign: You can be an example through your purity. Stop sin before it happens. Say no when the devil tempts you to do the wrong thing. How can you be a better example through purity this coming week? What sin are you going to say “no” to?
  • Physical Challenge Ideas:
    • Walk around the circle 2 times.
    • 10 push-ups
    • Do the wave as a group
    • 15 jumping jacks
    • Give the team 1 minute to make up a cheer and perform it.
    • Optional: Have the group come up with their own challenge.

+ Charaders from Outer Space (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids. Today’s Bible verse says: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV). Tell your group they need to come up with silent charades that go along with the Bible verse. When finished, have your group practice the silent motions together, but with one catch. Tell them to perform the motions as if they were floating in space. When finished, have your group take a seat and recite the verse from memory aloud. Alternate between doing the silent, zero-gravity space motions and reciting the verse from memory until your group has successfully memorized the verse.
  • Question: You’re never too young to make a difference. What are some other things that God could do through you to make the world better?

+ Prayer Bands (Prayer Activity)

  • Say: Sometimes it can be hard to think of different things to talk to God about. We can sometimes get stuck praying about the same things over and over. We’re going to do an activity right now that will help us think about all the reasons we are thankful.
  • Directions: Place various colors of Tyvek® wristbands in the middle of the group. Allow each kid to choose one color. With a pen or marker, have them write the following verse on their wristband: “Oh give thanks to the Lord.” Psalm 107:1. When finished, randomly choose a colored wristband from the remaining pile. Ask the kids who have that color to answer the question: What is something you are thankful to God for? Continue drawing colors until everyone has had a chance to share. Next, open the kids in prayer. Allow everyone to tell God thanks for the things they shared. When finished, help the kids put their wristbands on. Tell them to keep it on throughout the week and every time they notice it, they can say a silent prayer of thanks to God.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story?

    • Why do you think Stephen kept talking about Jesus even though he got in trouble for it?

  • For older kids:

    • In what way do you think you should be more like Stephen?

    • Why do you think Stephen was willing to give up his life for Jesus?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God. Thank Him for giving you the Bible. Ask Him to help you remember what it says when you have to make a hard choice.

    • Journal Station prompt: Stephen was killed because he followed Jesus. If you were Stephen, would you have been willing to die for Jesus? Why or why not? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Acts 6:8–15, 7:1–59. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Stephen was willing to give up his life to follow Jesus. What are some things that you would be willing to give up for Jesus? Draw a picture of them.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Back to the Bible (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: For each small group, print the “Back to the Bible” verse cards (see Resource Folder) on 8½ x 11 paper or cardstock and cut apart.
  • Say: In today’s story, Stephen had hidden God’s Word in his heart. When you hide God’s Word in your heart, it means that you remember what the Bible says and you think about it often. We’re going to play a game right now that helps us think about ways that God’s Word can help us choose the right path.
  • Directions: Divide your group into two teams. Choose two kids from each team to go first. Have one kid from each team sit in front of the other. Hand the two kids in back one of the “Back to the Bible” verse cards. The verse cards will have a Bible reference on them, but not the actual verse. (For example: Luke 6:31.) Both kids should have cards with the same Bible reference. On “go,” have the kids in the back use their finger to write the letters from the Bible reference on the backs of their partner. The two kids in front will have to determine what Bible reference is being written on their back. The first team to get it right wins the round. When finished, have your group open their Bibles, look up the verse, and read it aloud. After reading it, ask them the question below. Following the discussion, choose two more kids from each team and repeat the instructions above for each of the 4 Bible references.
  • Question: Can you think of a time when this verse could have helped you make the right choice?
  • Directions: When finished, ask the kids to share which of those verses they most need to hide in their heart and why. Encourage them to memorize that verse over the week.
  • Question: Hiding God’s Word in our heart doesn’t just help us know what’s right, it helps us do what’s right. Is there something that you know is right, but you have a hard time doing it? (Note to leader: if you know a Bible verse that addresses their struggle, share it with them.)

+ Bible Bombardment (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Set-Up: For each small group place a long tape line on the floor.
  • Directions: Place the “Bible Verse” sign in the middle of your group. Read the verse several times with your group so that they can begin to memorize it. Today’s Bible verse says: “I have hidden your word in my heart so that I won’t sin against you.” Psalm 119:11. Divide your group into two teams. Choose one kid from each team to be the “cupbearer.” Have the cupbearer kneel down approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) from the tape line and hold a plastic cup to the top of their head. Give all of the other kids 3 cotton balls and tell them to gather behind the tape line while facing their teammate with the cup. On the count of 3, have all of the kids begin throwing their cotton balls at their cupbearer, attempting to land it in the cup. They may not cross the tape line. (Hint: It’s easier to score a cotton ball in the cup if the cupbearer tilts forward a bit.) When finished, count up how many cotton balls each team got in their cup. However many cotton balls the team scored is how many times the other team has to recite the verse aloud. Play multiple rounds and allow different kids to be the cupbearer.
  • Question: Do you have any tips or tricks for memorizing things like Bible verses? Do you have a favorite Bible verse that you’ve hidden in your heart? What is it?

+ Prayer Doodles (Prayer Activity)

  • Directions: Place a poster board or piece of butcher block paper in the middle of the group along with a box of markers. Tell the kids to think about a prayer request they have. When ready, have them begin drawing a picture of their request on the poster board or paper. When the kids are finished, allow them to talk about their drawing and share their request with the group. When everyone has finished sharing, lead the kids in a closing prayer. Allow them to pray for the things that were just shared.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story?

    • What are some ways that Barnabas helped the followers of Jesus?

  • For older kids:

    • What difference did Barnabas make in the lives of the believers?

    • What could you do to be more like Barnabas?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Do you feel discouraged? Are you having trouble with something? Write a prayer to God and tell Him about it.

    • Journal Station prompt: Who do you know that could use some encouragement? How could you be like Barnabas to that person? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Acts 4:32–37. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: How could you give to, help, or encourage someone you know? Draw a picture of it.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Balloon Rocket Race (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: For each small group, cut 2 pieces of string or yarn to about 15 feet (4.5 meters.) Thread the string or yarn through a drinking straw. Tip: place the end of the string in the straw, then suck it through.
  • Say: (Hold up a deflated balloon for kids to see.) Today we talked about how it’s easy for people to feel like this balloon—deflated, defeated, and discouraged! But we also learned some ways to fill people up. We’re going to play a game right now that will help us think of how we can give to people, help people, and encourage people.
  • Directions: Divide your small group into 2 teams. Ask both teams the Round 1 question from below. Keep track of how many answers each team gives. When answers have been exhausted, allow each team to blow up a balloon with as many breaths as the number of answers their team gave. The more answers a team gives, the more breaths they get to put in the balloon. After blowing up the balloons, pinch them closed; do not tie them. Next, have 2 kids from each team stretch a string out so that it’s taut. The 2 strings should run parallel to one another. Each string will be threaded through a drinking straw. Use 2 pieces of tape to attach each balloon to one of the straws. (See picture below.) Have both teams position their balloon at the same end of their strings. Count to 3 and have the teams release their balloon at the same time. With the force of the air, the balloons will race down the length of the strings. The first balloon to reach the other end or the balloon that travels the farthest is the winner. Repeat this for each round with a different balloon.
  • Balloon Rocket Race Questions:
    • Round 1: Think of some people who don’t have all the things that they need in life. What are some ways or things that you can give to those people?
    • Round 2: Think of some people who need help with something. What are some ways that you can help those people?
    • Round 3: Think of some people who could use some encouragement. What are some things that you can say or do to encourage those people?

+ Bible Berserko (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. Practice saying it together a few times. When everyone is ready, turn the sign over so they can no longer read it. Today’s Bible verse says: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11a. Choose a kid in your group to roll the die. Depending on the number rolled, have the entire group recite the verse together in the style that corresponds with the list below. If someone rolls a 6, allow them to make up their own style. When finished, hand the die to another kid and repeat. Continue until every kid has had a turn or for as long as the activity maintains interest.
    1. In a silly monster voice.
    2. While spinning in circles.
    3. While thumb wrestling your neighbor.
    4. Like you just got sprayed by a skunk.
    5. Like you’re falling through the air.
    6. Make up your own.
  • Question: What do you think would happen if we never encouraged each other?

+ Pass-A_Prayer (Prayer Activity)

  • Set-Up: For each small group, inflate a balloon and use a marker to write the following verse on it: “My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you.” Psalm 71:23a
  • Say: Reading God’s Word fills our hearts with joy, but there’s something else that can give us joy, too! Psalm 71:23 tells us about it.
  • Directions: Read the Bible verse on the balloon and ask the question below. Next, toss the balloon to a kid in your group. Encourage the kid holding the balloon to share their answer to the question. When finished, have that kid toss the balloon to another kid and repeat. Continue until every kid has a turn to share. Finally, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to praise and thank God for the things that make them joyful.
  • Question: What are some things that God has given you or done for you that make you feel joyful?

April 25, 2021 - Lesson 2: Pentecost

Strike a Pose_Title Still.jpg

Big Idea: God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us follow Jesus.

Bible Basis: Acts 2:1-41

Key Verse: “But the Father will send the Friend in my name to help you. The Friend is the Holy Spirit.” John 14:26 (NIrV)

OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story?

    • How do you think the Holy Spirit helped the crowd of people learn about Jesus?

  • For older kids:

    • What does this story teach you about the Holy Spirit?

    • In what ways did the Holy Spirit help the followers of Jesus?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God and thank Him for giving us our Friend, the Holy Spirit.

    • Journal Station prompt: Has the Holy Spirit ever helped you? Has He filled you with joy, helped you remember God’s Word, guided you to do what’s right, or given you a spiritual gift or talent? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Acts 2:1–41. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of the believers with small flames above their heads. While you’re drawing, thank God for giving us the gift of the Holy Spirit.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Strike a Pose Community Builder

  • Directions: Tell the kids that on the count of 3, you want them to strike a pose like they’ve just seen the craziest thing ever. After striking a pose, tell the kids to take a seat.
  • Say: Today we’re going to hear a story about something kind of crazy that happened to the early followers of Jesus. The people who saw it couldn’t believe it was happening.
  • Question: Has anything really crazy or unbelievable ever happened to you? Tell us about it.

+ A Rishing Wind (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: For each small group, print the 4 “Rushing Wind” questions on 8½ x 11 paper. Each question will be on a separate piece of paper. Crumple each piece of paper into a ball so that the question is not visible. Next, place 3 tape lines on the floor. The lines should be parallel to one another with about 2 feet (.6 meters) in-between each line (for a total of 4 feet between the two outer lines.)
  • Say: In today’s story, we heard how the Holy Spirit arrived during Pentecost like a rushing wind. The Holy Spirit now lives in the hearts of people who love and follow Jesus. We’re going to play a game right now that will help us think about 4 different ways the Holy Spirit guides and helps us.
  • Directions: Divide your small group into 2 teams. Have each team sit facing each other behind one of the outer lines on the floor. Give each kid a paper plate. When ready, toss one of the 4 crumpled pieces of paper onto the middle line. Tell the kids that they have 20 seconds to blow the paper onto the opposing team’s side using only the paper plate. They may not strike the paper with their plate. Use a stopwatch or smartphone to keep track of time. After 20 seconds, determine which side of the line the paper was on and award a point to the other team. Next, un-crumple the paper and read the question. Allow the winning team to answer first, followed by the other team. When finished, set that paper aside and play another round using one of the other crumpled pieces of paper. Continue until all of the questions (listed below) have been discussed.
  • Rishing Wind Questions:
    • The Holy Spirit comforts us and gives us joy. Can you think of a time that the Holy Spirit did that for you? Tell about it.
    • The Holy Spirit helps us understand and remember God’s Word. Has He ever done that for you? What Bible verse or story did He remind you of and how did it help you?
    • The Holy Spirit guides us in doing what is right. Has there ever been a time when you were about to make a bad choice and the Holy Spirit nudged you toward doing the right thing?
    • The Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts or talents that we can use to help other people follow Jesus. Has the Holy Spirit made you really good at something? How can you use that talent to help other people?
  • Say: During that game, we created quite a bit of wind. Do you remember how the Holy Spirit is kind of like the wind? (Answer: Even though we can’t see the wind, we know it’s real because we can feel it and see what it does. In the same way, we can’t see the Holy Spirit, but we can feel how He comforts us and see how He helps us remember God’s Word, guides us in doing what’s right, and gives us spiritual gifts.)

+ Meteor Shower (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Set-Up: Use tape to create a square on the floor that is about 8 feet (2.5 meters) in width. Crumple 10 pieces of paper into balls.
  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. Today’s Bible verse says: “But the Father will send the Friend in my name to help you. The Friend is the Holy Spirit.” John 14:26. When ready, have the kids stay seated but spread out within the square. Tell them that the square is their space station and the crumpled pieces of paper are meteors. Their mission is to protect the space station from getting hit by the meteors. Count to 3 and throw all 10 meteors simultaneously into the air above the space station. The kids will have to catch or swat the meteors out of the air, but some meteors will inevitably get through. Once a meteor has touched the floor, it cannot be moved. Count how many meteors landed in the space station and have the group recite the verse together that many times. Continue playing rounds for as long as you would like.
  • Question: Can you think of a time that the Holy Spirit has helped you? Tell us about it.

+ Shark Man (Prayer Activity)

  • Directions: Have your group sit in a circle. Place the “Shark Man” game sheet in the middle of the group. Play “Shark Man” the same way you would play “Hangman.” The game sheet will have blanks for the words (not including the Book name or numbers) in the following Bible verse: “Give thanks to the Lord.” Psalm 136:1. If kids guess a letter that is in the puzzle, fill in the appropriate blank. If they guess a letter that is not in the puzzle, draw one part of a man (head, body, arm, leg, etc.) attached to the parachute. For younger kids, you may want to include a circle for each hand and foot in order to give them more chances. If they can say the verse before the man is completed, they win. If the man is completed before they can say the verse correctly, the game is over. Finish the verse for them
  • Say: Psalm 136:1 tells us that God is good! He gives us so many things to be thankful for. What has God given you that you’re thankful for?
  • Directions: Allow the kids to talk about what they’re thankful for. When everyone has had a chance to share, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to thank God for the things they shared.

April 11, 2021 - Lesson 5: Jesus' Power over Sin and Death

Artrageous_Logo.png

Big Idea: Jesus has power over sin and death, so we can call on Him to be saved.

Bible Basis: Luke 24:13-35; Romans 1-10

Key Verse: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13

Why?

    • If you were one of the two men, how do you think you would have reacted when you recognized Jesus for the first time?

  • For older kids:

    • Why do you think God kept the two men from recognizing Jesus?

    • Why do you think it’s so important that Jesus died and was raised from the dead?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus. Praise Him for taking your sins away.

    • Journal Station prompt: Imagine you took a walk with Jesus like the 2 men on the road to Emmaus. What kind of questions would you ask Jesus? What would you say to Him? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Luke 24:13-34. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: How does it make you feel to know that Jesus is alive and has forgiven your sins? Draw a picture of it.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Artrageous Community Builder

  • Directions: Give each kid a piece of paper and a marker or pen. Tell the kids to draw a picture of their dream pet—real or imaginary! When finished, have the kids take turns showing their drawing and allowing the others to guess what they drew.

+ Walk the Line (Application Activity)

  • Set Up: Place a 10-15 foot (3-4.5 meters) long strip of tape on the floor.
  • Say: Today we learned why the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection is so important. When Jesus died on the cross, He took the punishment for our sins. Thanks to Him, we can now be forgiven and spend forever with Him in Heaven. We’re going to do an activity right now that will help us figure out which of us truly needs forgiveness.
  • Directions: Line your group up at one end of the tape line. Challenge the kids to walk on the line without stepping off. If they step off of the tape line, they’re out and must return to the back of the line. At first, it will be easy, but then introduce some of the following additional challenges: walk backwards, bear crawl, hop on one foot, hop backwards on one foot, close your eyes, etc. For the last round, quickly spin each kid in circles 10-12 times before they walk the line. Inevitably, the kids will be dizzy and step off of the line before reaching the end.
  • Say: In the end, everybody stepped off of the line at least once. That’s kind of like what the Bible says about sin. (Open your Bible to Romans 3:23 and read aloud, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”) Staying on the tape line is kind of like following Jesus without messing up or sinning. But at some point we all step off the line. We all break God’s rules and sin. That means we all need to be forgiven.
  • Questions:
    • If you tried really hard, how long do you think you could go without messing up or sinning?
    • What do you think you have to do to get God’s forgiveness and spend forever in Heaven with Him?

+ Toss-A-Verse (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. Practice saying it together a few times. When everyone is ready, turn the sign over so they can no longer read it. Today’s Bible verse says: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13. Tell the kids they’re going to toss an imaginary object to each other. The kid who catches the object has to say the next word in the verse. Let the kids take turns deciding what the imaginary object will be. It could be something really small, like a feather; really big, like a refrigerator; or really hot, like a fireball. They’ll have to adjust how they throw the object based on what’s being thrown. Continue throwing the object until the whole verse has been recited. When finished, have the entire group say the whole verse together. Next, choose a different imaginary object and begin another round. Continue playing rounds until the kids have confidently memorized the verse. When finished, ask the following question:
  • Question: Do you think there’s a sin so big and bad that Jesus can’t save you from it? Why or why not? (The answer is NO! Jesus’ death is enough to cover any sin, no matter how big or bad.)

+ Artrageous Prayers (Prayer Activity)

  • Set up: Provide one plain white self-adhesive name badge for each kid in the group. Hang a piece of poster board or butcher block paper on a wall in the room. At the top of the board write the words, “I give my PRAISE to God.”
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group a blank name badge sticker. Place some colored markers in the middle of the group. Tell the kids to think of something that is awesome about God or something awesome that God did and draw or write about it on their name badge. When finished, allow the kids to show their prayer art and talk about it. Next, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to praise God and tell Him He’s awesome. Finally, when the prayer is over, lead the kids to the poster board sign that says, “I give my PRAISE to God.” Tell them to give their praise to God by removing the sticker and sticking it to the sign. In the end, the kids will have created a visual art collage. Consider keeping the collages on the wall throughout the remainder of the “Artrageous” series.

March 28, 2021 - Lesson 3: Peter Denies Knowing Jesus

Artrageous_Logo.png

Big Idea: Jesus saves us from sin, so we can boldly tell others that “I’m with Him!”.

Bible Basis: Luke 22:31-34, 54-56

Key Verse: “I’m not ashamed of the good news. It is God’s power to save everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16

Why?

    • If you were Peter, what do you think you would have done when people asked if you knew Jesus? Why?

  • For older kids:

    • Peter said that he was willing to go to jail or even die for Jesus, but then he denied even knowing Him. Why do think that happened?

    • If you were Peter, what do you think you would have done when people asked if you knew Jesus? Why?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus and tell Him, “I’m with You!”.

    • Journal Station prompt: Do you know somebody who doesn’t know about the good news of Jesus? How could you tell them the good news? What would you say? Write about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Luke 22:31-34, 54-62. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of yourself standing next to Jesus. Write the words, “I’m with Jesus!”.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Artrageous Community Builder

  • Say: Today we’re going to hear the “artrageous” story of a man who had to make a super hard decision. But here’s the really fun part—we get to create story art while we listen! We’ll find out more about that later, but right now I think we should do an “artrageous” warm up.
  • Directions: Give each kid a piece of paper and a marker or pen. Tell the kids to draw a picture of their favorite food, but with a twist—they have to draw it with their eyes closed the entire time. When finished, have the kids take turns showing their drawing and allowing the others to guess what they drew.

+ I'm with Jesus (Application Activity)

  • Say: In today’s story, Peter pretended like he didn’t know Jesus because he was scared of what people might think or do. Telling people you’re a Christian can be hard sometimes, but we don’t have to be ashamed. We’re going to make something right now that will show people that we’re not afraid to say, “I’m with Jesus!”
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group a Tyvek® wristband and some markers. Tell the kids to write the words “I’m with Jesus” on their wristband, then have them decorate their wristband in a fun and creative way. If time and materials allow, they can even create multiple wristbands. When finished, help the kids put their wristband(s) on and challenge them to wear it for at least a week. Encourage the kids to be ready to tell others about the good news of Jesus if someone asks about their wristband. When the kids are finished creating, have them show each other their wristbands and answer the following questions.
  • Question:
    • If someone this week asks you about your wristband, what will you tell them?
    • How could you use that opportunity to tell people about the good news of Jesus?
      • If someone told you that believing in Jesus is weird, would it be hard for you to tell that person that you believe in Jesus? Why or why not?
      • Why do you think it’s important for your friends to know if you’re a follower of Jesus? How could that help them become followers of Jesus too?
      • Can you think of someone you would like to invite to church for Easter next weekend? How are you going to invite them?

+ Survivor (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. When everyone is ready, turn the sign over so they can no longer read it. Next, tell your group that they are all on a sinking ship and that you (the small group leader) are a part of a rescue team looking for survivors. To be a survivor the kids have to complete a task while saying the Bible verse out loud. If they complete both the task and the Bible verse successfully, they have to yell, “I’m a survivor.” If they mess up on either the task or the Bible verse, they have to pretend to sink into the floor as if it were water. Today’s Bible verse says: “I’m not ashamed of the good news. It is God’s power to save everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16. (Listed below are some optional actions. Use as many as you wish, but consider asking the kids for ideas for challenging actions to complete while reciting the verse)
    • Hop on one foot while turning in circles
    • Perform push-ups
    • Pat head with one hand and rub stomach with the other
    • Jumping jacks
    • Go back and forth giving “high 10’s” to the kid on either side
    • Pair up with another kid and do leap frog
    • Quickly spin around in circles
    • Perform sit-ups
  • Question: Do you know anyone who doesn’t go to church or know about Jesus? How could you share the good news of Jesus with that person?

+ Artrageous Prayers (Prayer Activity)

  • Set up: Provide one plain white self-adhesive name badge for each kid in the group. Hang a piece of poster board or butcher block paper on a wall in the room. At the top of the board write the words, “I give my THANKS to God.”
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group a blank name badge sticker. Place some colored markers in the middle of the group. Tell the kids to think of something that they’re thankful for and draw or write about it on their name badge. When finished, allow the kids to show their prayer art and talk about it. Next, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to tell God “thanks!” for the things they drew. Finally, when the prayer is over, lead the kids to the poster board sign that says, “I give my THANKS to God.” Tell them to give their thanks to God by removing the sticker and sticking it to the sign. In the end, the kids will have created a visual art collage. Consider keeping the collages on the wall throughout the remainder of the “Artrageous” series.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • Even though dying on the cross was going to be really hard, Jesus was willing to do it anyway. Why do you think Jesus did it?

  • For older kids:

    • What does this story teach you about Jesus?

    • Even though dying on the cross was going to be really hard, Jesus was willing to do it anyway. Why do you think Jesus did it?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Do you feel troubled or worried about something? Write a prayer to God and tell Him about it. Ask Him to take it from you.

    • Journal Station prompt: Write a letter to Jesus and tell Him how amazing He is for dying on the cross for you.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Matthew 26:36-56. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: What is something that you feel troubled or worried about? Draw a picture of it. While you’re drawing, ask God to help you not feel worried about it anymore.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Artrageour Community Builder

  • Directions: Have the kids sit in a circle. Give each kid a piece of paper. Place some markers in the middle of the group. Tell the kids to draw a picture of what their face looks like when they get really worried. As the kids begin drawing, count silently down from 10. When 10 seconds have passed, say “STOP!” Have the kids pass their paper to the person on their right and tell them to continue drawing on their new picture. Repeat this every 10 seconds until all of the drawings are finished. Encourage the kids to show the final pictures to the rest of the group.

+ Over to God (Application Activity)

  • Set up: Print the “Prayer Hands” puzzle sheet on 8½ x 11 paper. Cut the sheet into 8 equally sized cards
  • Say: In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus began to feel sad and troubled at the thought of dying on the cross, but He turned it over to God by praying. We’re going to practice doing that same thing right now.
  • Directions: Ask the kids in your group, “What kind of things in your life make you feel troubled or worried?” As the kids share, write one answer on the back (blank) side of each “Prayer Hands” puzzle card. When all 8 cards have something written on them, spread them out on the floor with the “worries” facing up. Tell the kids that when you say “go,” they have to quickly turn all of the cards over and arrange them to form a picture of praying hands. Time them to see how fast they can do it. If you would like to play additional rounds, flip the cards back over and repeat, but tell the kids that after turning the cards over, they can only use their nose to arrange the cards. For each additional round choose a different body part to use such as chin, ear, elbow or forehead!
  • Say: When we turned our worries over, it formed a picture of praying hands. The best way for us to turn our worries over to God is through prayer, just like Jesus did in the garden. In fact, let’s do that now.
  • Pray: Decide on a way for your group to join together in prayer. You may choose to have the group hold hands, link arms, or take a knee and stack their hands in the middle of the group. Open your group in prayer. Encourage the kids to tell God about something that worries them and ask God to take their worry away. Finally, when finished, close the group in one final prayer of praise to God.

+ Bible Verse Bonkers (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Set Up: Print the “Bible Verse Bonkers” cards on 8½ x 11 cardstock and cut apart. Each set should have 11 cards.
  • Directions: Ask the kids in your group to make up a Bonkers action—something crazy that the whole group will have to do. (For example: walk around like a chicken while barking like a dog.) When ready, place the 11 “Bible Verse Bonkers” cards face down in the middle of your group. Eight of the cards will have a portion of today’s Bible verse on it and three of the cards will be “Bonkers” cards. One at a time, have the kids in your group take turns flipping over cards. If they flip over a Bible verse card, have them try to place it in the right spot so that the verse reads in order. If they flip over all 3 “Bonkers” cards before completing the verse, the entire group must perform the pre-determined Bonkers action. After performing the action, allow the kids to finish placing the remaining Bible verse cards in order, read the verse aloud a few times. Next, remove the cards and ask the kids to recite the verse from memory. Play as many rounds as it takes for the kids to confidently memorize the verse. Today’s Bible verse says: “Turn all of your worries over to him. He cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7
  • Question: How do you think God can help you with your worries?

+ Artrageous Prayers (Prayer Activity)

  • Set up: Provide one plain white self-adhesive name badge for each kid in the group. Hang a piece of poster board or butcher block paper on a wall in the room. At the top of the board write the words, “I give my WORRIES to God.”
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group a blank name badge sticker. Place some colored markers in the middle of the group. Tell the kids to think of something that makes them feel troubled or worried and draw or write about it on their name badge. When finished, allow the kids to show their prayer art and talk about it. Next, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to pray that God would take their worry away from them. Finally, when the prayer is over, lead the kids to the poster board sign that says, “I give my WORRIES to God.” Tell them to give their worry over to God by removing the sticker and sticking it to the sign. In the end, the kids will have created a visual art collage. Consider keeping the collages on the wall throughout the remainder of the “Artrageous” series.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • Are you surprised that Jesus cried? Why or why not?

  • For older kids:

    • Why do you think Peter started to doubt Jesus?

    • Jesus knew that Lazarus would be raised from the dead, so why do you think he cried?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus. Tell Him about something that makes you sad.

    • Journal Station prompt: The Book of Psalms are filled with songs and poems to God. Write your own song or poem to God about something that makes you sad. Tell Him what you do when you’re sad. And just like the psalms, the words don’t have to rhyme.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: John 11:1-44. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of Jesus crying. While you’re drawing, remember that when you feel sad, Jesus feels sad for you.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Artrageour Community Builder

  • Directions: Give each kid a piece of paper and some markers. Tell the kids to imagine that their favorite pet was just carried away by a fire breathing dragon. Encourage them to create an emoji that shows how they would feel about that. When finished, allow the kids to show their emoji to the group. After showing their emojis, ask them the following question.
  • Question: Wow—those are some pretty worried looking emojis. When is the last time you made a face like that? What happened?

+ Tissue Issues (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: markers, facial tissues
  • Say: Everyone gets sad sometimes! Even Jesus got sad. But we don’t have to keep our sadness to ourselves, we can share those things with each other. We’re going to do an activity right now that will help us do that.
  • Directions: Place some markers in the middle of your group and give each kid a facial tissue. Tell the kids to draw a picture of something on the facial tissue that has recently made them sad. When finished, allow the kids to show and explain their drawing to the group.
  • Say: It’s helpful to share our sadness with each other, but in Psalm 42:4, it tells something even better to do. The psalmist says, “When I remember what has happened, I tell God all of my troubles.” I have a challenge for you that’s going to help you remember to do that.
  • Directions: Tell the kids to look up at the ceiling and place their facial tissue over their face. Count to 3 and tell them blow their tissue up to God. Watch to see who blew it the highest and announce them as the winner of the challenge. You can repeat this for a number of rounds. When finished, tell the kids to see that as a reminder for them to give their sadness over to God. Close the activity by opening your group in prayer. Encourage the kids to pray about the things that make them sad and to ask God to bring their joy back.

+ Bible Emoji (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Set Up: Print 2 copies of the “Bible Emoji Pieces.” Each copy will have 4 different pieces to an emoji (mouth, eyes, tongue, etc.) Each piece will have one of the numbers 2-5 on it. Cut the pieces out.
  • Directions: Place the “Bible Verse” sign in the middle of your group. Read the verse several times with your group so that they can begin to memorize it. Today’s Bible verse says: “My tears have been my food day and night...When I remember what has happened, I tell God all of my troubles.” Psalm 42:3-4. When ready, remove the Bible verse sign and divide your group into two teams. Choose a team to go first and have them recite the Bible verse together. If they fail to recite it, the turn moves to the other team. If they recite it successfully, allow that team to roll a dice. If they roll a 1, give them the plate. If they roll a 2-5, give them the emoji piece with that number on it. If they roll a 6, they can choose the plate or any emoji piece they want. If they roll a number that they’ve already rolled, they receive no additional piece and the turn moves to the other team. Have each team take turns reciting the verse and rolling the dice until one team has successfully collected all of the pieces and assembled their emoji.
  • Question: Why do you think it’s good to tell God about your troubles? How do you think it helps?

+ Artrageous Prayers (Prayer Activity)

  • Set up: Provide one plain white self-adhesive name badge for each kid in the group. Hang a piece of poster board or butcher block paper on a wall in the room. At the top of the board write the words, “I give my SADNESS to God."
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group a blank name badge sticker. Place some colored markers in the middle of the group. Today we learned that we can tell God about the things that make us sad. Tell the kids to think of something that makes them sad and draw or write about it on their name badge. When finished, allow the kids to show their prayer art and talk about it. Next, lead your group in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to pray that God would take their sadness away from them. Finally, when the prayer is over, lead the kids to the poster board sign that says, “I give my SADNESS to God.” Tell them to give their sadness over to God by removing the sticker and sticking it to the sign. In the end, the kids will have created a visual art collage. Consider keeping the collages on the wall throughout the remainder of the “Artrageous” series.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • Why do you think Peter started to sink into the water?

  • For older kids:

    • Why do you think Peter started to doubt Jesus?

    • Would you have doubted a little bit too? Why or why not?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus. Praise Him and thank Him for His incredible power.

    • Journal Station prompt: What are some ways you can keep your eyes on Jesus this week? Write down some times and places that you can think about Him, pray to Him, and read His Word—the Bible.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Matthew 14:22–33. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: When Peter was in trouble, Jesus reached out to Him. Draw a picture of Jesus reaching out to you. Remember that Jesus is always there to help you with your problems.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Freeze Frame Community Builder

  • Say: Can you believe it? Today is the last day of “Freeze Frame.” For the past 4 weeks we’ve been talking about the miracles of Jesus. A miracle is something amazing that only Jesus can do. Do you remember some of the miracles that Jesus performed? (Answers include: calming a storm, driving out evil spirits, healing the sick, raising a girl from the dead, and feeding 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.) Today we’re going to hear about one more amazing miracle! But first, I want you to answer this question:
  • Question: If you could have seen Jesus perform one of these miracles, which one would you want to see? Why?

+ Eyes on Jesus (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: “Eyes on Jesus” illusion printout, pen or pencil
  • Say: In our story for today, Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and looked at the storm around him. That’s when he began to sink into doubt. The same thing can happen to us when we take our eyes off of Jesus. We’re going to do an activity right now that will help us remember to keep thinking about and praying to Jesus in the middle of our problems or challenges.
  • Directions: Give everyone in your group an “Eyes on Jesus” illusion printout and a pen or pencil. Ask the kids what kind of problems or challenges they’re facing right now. Examples might include a hard year at school or a big fight with their brother or sister. For older kids, have them write their problems on the outer edges of the paper as they share them with the group. For younger kids who are still learning to write, have them draw a frowning face on the outer edges of the paper for each problem that is shared. When everyone in the group has had a chance to talk about their problems or challenges, tell the kids to stare at the 3 dots in the middle of their picture for 30 seconds. When the time is up, tell them to close their eyes and ask if they can see the image of Jesus in the darkness. If they can’t, or if they want to do it again, repeat a 2nd or 3rd time.
  • Question: After focusing on Jesus, what happened to your problems when you closed your eyes? (Answer: they went away; all you could see was Jesus.)
  • Question: How does this remind you of what happens when we keep looking to Jesus?
  • Question: Have you ever felt like you were sinking into doubt? In other words, have you ever wondered if your problems are too big for Jesus to help you with? Have you ever wondered if He cares about your problems?
  • Question: What’s your plan for keeping your eyes on Jesus this week? When and where could you spend time thinking about Jesus, praying to Him, or reading His Word?

+ Imagine If (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. Today’s Bible verse says: Today’s Bible verse says: “Let us keep looking to Jesus.” Hebrews 12:2a. When ready, remove the Bible verse sign and place the 6 “Imagine If” cards face down in the middle of the circle. Choose a kid to turn over one of the cards. The card will ask the kids to imagine if they were something. (For example: Imagine if you were a space alien.) Tell the kids to recite the verse together from memory as if they were that person or thing. Continue until all cards have been used.
  • Question: What do you think it means to “look to Jesus”?
  • Question: How can you look to Jesus this week

+ Drawing Close to God (Prayer Activity)

  • Directions: Place a poster board or piece of butcher block paper in the middle of the group along with a box of markers. In the middle of the poster board or paper, write the word “PRAISE” in large letters. Tell the kids to think about a problem or challenge that Jesus helped them overcome in the past. When ready, have the kids draw a picture of it on the poster board or paper. When everyone is finished, allow the kids to talk about the problem or challenge and how Jesus helped them with it. When everyone has finished sharing, lead the kids in a closing prayer. Encourage the kids to thank and praise Jesus for helping them overcome their problem or challenge.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • If you were the little boy, would you have given all of your food to Jesus? Why or why not?

  • For older kids:

    • What does this story teach you about Jesus?

    • Do you think the disciples ever imagined that Jesus could multiply the bread and fish to feed the people? Why or why not?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus. Tell Him how amazing He is for doing BIG things with the little bit that you give Him.

    • Journal Station prompt: Think about a time when you gave Jesus something small, but He did something BIG with it. Maybe it was a few encouraging words or a small amount of time doing something nice, but it made a big difference for someone. Write about it..

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: John 6:1–14. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Think of something you can give to Jesus. Draw a picture of it.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Freeze Frame Community Builder

  • Say: We’re in the middle of a series called “Freeze Frame.” We’ve talked about some really amazing miracles that Jesus did. Who remembers what a miracle is? (Take answers.) Great answers! A miracle is something amazing that only Jesus can do. In today’s story, we’re going to hear about a crowd of people who were SUPER hungry! When I say “Freeze Frame,” show me what you look like when you’re SUPER hungry. 3, 2, 1…“Freeze Frame!”.
  • Question: Tell us about a time when you were super hungry! What was the food you most wanted to eat?

+ Growing Gifts (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Orbz water beads or something similar
  • Say: Today we learned that Jesus can do BIG things with the little bit that we give Him. Sometimes you might think that what you have to offer God isn’t all that special or great, but that’s not true. We’re going to do something now to help us think of things we can give to Jesus and be reminded that He can do great things with even the smallest gifts.
  • Directions: Place a bucket of water about 10 feet away from your small group. Give each kid a plastic spoon. Tell the kids that the object of the game is to get all 5 of their beads into the bucket. To do so, they must answer a question. After discussing the answer, each kid will receive one water bead, put the handle of the spoon in their mouth, place the bead on the spoon, move to the bucket in the manner indicated with the question, then drop the bead into the water. As the beads sit in the water, they will expand in size. Continue until all of the questions have been discussed. At the end of the activity, note how the beads began so small, but have grown so much bigger. Allow kids to play with the beads and remind them that God can use even tiny gifts to do big things. NOTE: If you want to allow kids to see fully grown water beads, you may wish to place some dry beads in the bucket of water in advance to give them more time to grow.
  • Questions:
    • How can you use your time to do something good for Jesus? Be specific. (Walk backwards to the bucket!)
      • How can you use your talents to do something good for Jesus? Be specific. (Crawl to the bucket!)
      • How can you use your money or possessions to do something good for Jesus? Be specific. (Bear crawl to the bucket!)
      • How do you think Jesus might take your small gift of time, talent, or money and do something BIG? (Crabwalk to the bucket!)
      • Have you ever done something seemingly small that Jesus used in BIG ways? Tell us about it. (Army crawl to the bucket!)
  • Say: These waters beads started off so tiny, but now they’re way bigger. That’s kind of like what Jesus does with the time, talents, and money that we give Him. Even though our gifts might seem so small, Jesus can do BIG things with them.

+ Slap It (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. Today’s Bible verse says: “God is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine. He does everything by his power that is working in us.” Ephesians 3:20. When ready, remove the Bible verse sign and choose 2 kids to battle one another. Give both kids a set of Bible verse cards. Tell them to mix the cards up and spread them face down on the floor in front of them. Each card has a portion of the Bible verse on it. When ready, have them quickly flip the cards face up and slap them in the correct order while saying the word(s) on each card. The first kid to slap the cards and say the verse in the right order wins the round. For younger kids, their set will have numbers on the top of each card to assist them if needed. Continue playing until every kid has had a turn. If time permits, play an elimination tournament until there is only one champion.
  • Question: God’s power helps us do BIG things for Him—bigger than we can even imagine. How could you use God’s power this week to do something big for Him?

+ WIKKI® PRAYERS (Prayer Activity)

  • Set-up: 2-3 Wikkie Stix® for each person.
  • Directions: Give each kid in your group 2–3 Wikki Stix®. Tell them to form their sticks into the shape of their prayer request. Their request can be something they’re thankful for, something they need help with, or something they’re sorry for. After a few minutes, choose a kid to show their creation. Let the other kids guess what it is. After the rest of the group is finished guessing, allow the artist to reveal the answer and tell a little bit more about their request. When everyone has had a chance to share, open the kids in prayer by sharing your own request. Following your prayer, allow the kids in your group to pray aloud as well.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • If you were Jairus, would you have had faith that Jesus could heal your daughter? Why or why not?

  • For older kids:

    • What does this story teach you about Jesus?

    • Jesus told the sick woman, “Your faith has healed you.” Why do you think He said that?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Do you know someone who is sick or hurt? Write a prayer to Jesus and ask Him to heal that person.

    • Journal Station prompt: Imagine you were at Jairus’ house when Jesus healed the little girl. Write a letter about what you saw.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Mark 5:35–43. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: What do you think it will be like in Heaven? Draw a picture of it.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Freeze Frame Community Builder

  • Say: Raise your hand if you’re dead. (Kids respond.) I’m just kidding you! If you were dead, I’m pretty sure you couldn’t raise your hand. Unless, that is, you’re the girl in our true Bible story for today. In just a little bit, we’re going to hear how Jesus performed one of the most incredible miracles ever. A miracle is something amazing that only Jesus can do. Before we get to that, though, I want to ask you a question.
  • Question: Have you ever been REALLY sick? What was wrong with you and what did you do to get better?

+ The Floating Ball (Application Activity)

  • Set-Up: Sit somewhere close to an outlet. For each small group, plug an extension cord into the outlet, then plug a hair dryer into the extension cord. Place a bucket in the middle of the small group.
  • Say: In our story today, Jairus (pronounced Jī-ruhs) had faith that Jesus could heal his daughter even after she died. (Hold a hair dryer so that it’s pointing upward and set a ping pong ball on top of blower.) When Jesus saw the little girl, He said, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” (Turn hair dryer on low. The ball will rise up and float in the air.) And just like that, the little girl rose from the dead. (After a moment, turn off hair dryer.) We saw this during large group, now we get to try it for ourselves.
  • Question: Have you or someone you know ever been sick and asked Jesus for healing? What happened?
  • Question: If no, what do you think would happen if you did?
  • Directions: Allow each kid to answer the question(s) above. After answering, give them the hair dryer and ping pong ball. Have them place the ball on top of the blower and turn it on low. Once they get the ball floating in the air, give them the following challenges: • Move the hair dryer and ball in a circular motion. • Quickly pass your free hand between the ball and hair dryer without dropping the ball. • Tilt the hair dryer at a slight angle without dropping the ball. • Move the ball toward the bucket in the middle and drop it in without missing. Continue until every kid has had a turn answering the question(s) and performing some or all of the challenges. When finished, ask the following additional questions:
  • Question: How does it help you to know that Jesus is more powerful than sickness and death?
  • Question: TWhat if you pray for someone to get better and they don’t? Do you think that means Jesus can’t heal them? Why or why not? (Suggested answer: Jesus will eventually heal everybody who follows Him when they get to Heaven.)
  • Question: In addition to praying for sick people, what else can you do to show them the love of Jesus?

+ Words Away (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Directions: Have your kids sit in a small circle. After writing the Bible verse on a small dry erase board, hold the board up so that your group can see the verse and read it together. Today’s verse says: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death. And there will be no more sadness.” Revelation 21:4a. After reading it one time, pass the board to the kid on your right and tell them to erase one word. Instruct the kid to hold the board up and have your group read the verse again, this time reciting the missing word from memory. Keep on passing the board around the circle, allowing each kid to erase one word and then reading/reciting the verse as a group. Continue until all of the words are gone and your group can recite the entire verse.
  • Question: What do you think the best part of Heaven will be?

+ Prayer Bag (Prayer Activity)

  • Set-up: place a handful of Band-Aids in a paper lunch bag and fold it closed.
  • Directions: Pass the “Prayer Bag” around the circle. The bag will contain a handful of Band-Aids. Tell the kids to feel how heavy the bag is without shaking it or looking inside. After the bag makes one round, tell the kids to guess what’s inside. Next, pass the “Prayer Bag” around the circle again, but this time allow the kids to shake the bag. After the bag makes it around the circle, tell the kids to take another guess. Finally, pass the bag around the circle one last time, but this time, without looking at it, allow the kids to reach inside and feel the object. When finished, ask the kids what they think the object is. After the kids have guessed, reveal the object to the group.
  • Read: Open your Bible and read Psalm 103:3.
  • Say: The Bible says that God can heal our bodies from sickness. He can also heal our broken hearts from sadness.
  • Directions: Tell the kids to think about someone who is sick or sad and ask them to share it with the group. When finished, open the kids in prayer. Encourage the kids to take turns praying that God would heal them or the person they’re thinking of.

February 14, 2021 - Lesson 2: Jesus Drives Out Evil Spirits

Freeze Frame_Title Graphic.jpg

Big Idea: Jesus helps us sail through the “storms” of life without falling into fear.

Bible Basis: Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25

Key Verse: “You came near when I called out to you. You said, “Do not be afraid.” Lamentations 3:57

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What was your favorite part of this story? Why?

    • If you were in the boat with Jesus, would you have been scared like the disciples were? Why or why not?

  • For older kids:

    • What does this story teach you about Jesus?

    • Why do you think the disciples were scared even though Jesus was in the boat with them?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to Jesus. Ask Him to be near you and to keep you from being afraid.

    • Journal Station prompt: Write a letter to Jesus. Tell Him about a “storm” in your life. In other words, tell Him about something bad that happened, then ask Him to keep you from falling into fear.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Mark 4:35–41. Draw a picture of the story or write to God about your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: What are you afraid of? Draw a picture of it. While you’re drawing, ask Jesus to help you not be afraid.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

+ Freeze Frame Community Builder

  • Say: Today we’re starting a brand-new series called “Freeze Frame.” It’s going to be super fun, but more than that, we’re going to hear some really cool stories about the miracles of Jesus. Does anyone know what a miracle is? (Take answers.) Great answers! A miracle is something only Jesus can do. Today we’re going to hear about a miracle that Jesus did in the middle of a monster storm.
  • Question: What’s the worst storm you’ve ever been in? Tell us about it.
  • Question: If your face was frozen in the same position for your entire life, what face would you want to be making? Show us.

+ Falling into Fear (Application Activity)

  • Say: Today we learned that when we hold onto Jesus, it keeps us from falling into fear. We’re going to play a game right now that will help us think about the kind of fears that Jesus helps us overcome.
  • Directions: Divide your group into 2 teams. Place 2 paper plates on the floor about 3 feet (1 meter) apart. Choose one kid from each team to stand on a plate. Tell them to face each other and clasp hands with interlocking fingers. When you say “go,” each kid must try to push or pull the other kid off of their plate while remaining on their own plate. The first kid to step off of their plate loses the round. Give a point to the other team. When the round is finished, ask the 2 participants the question below. At the end of the game, count up the points and declare a winner.
  • Question: What kind of “storms” have you had in your life? In other words, what kind of bad things have happened in your life that made you worried or afraid?
  • Say: That game kind of reminds us of the storms in our life. The plate is like peace and the floor is like fear. The kid that you were battling with is like a storm—the bad things in life that push us and pull us so that we fall into fear. Fortunately, we have someone to hold onto when those bad things happen. We can hold onto Jesus. Holding onto Jesus means that we trust Him and pray to Him. And when we do that, he keeps us from falling into fear.
  • Question: Have you ever prayed to Jesus when you were afraid? What were you afraid of? How did praying help you?

+ Bible Verse Tic-Tac-Toe (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Set Up: Using tape, create a tic-tac-toe board on the floor in the middle of the group. The squares should be large enough to fit an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper.
  • Directions: Place the Bible verse sign in the middle of the group and read it carefully with your kids several times so they can begin to memorize it. When everyone is ready, turn the sign over so they can no longer read it. Today’s Bible verse says: “You came near when I called out to you. You said, ‘Do not be afraid.’” Lamentations 3:57. Divide your group into two teams. Give one team the “X” papers and the other team the “O” papers. Decide which team will go first. Choose one kid from that team to recite the verse. If she does so successfully, allow her to place her team’s letter on any open square. If she is unable to recite the verse, her team may not place their letter on the board. Next, give the other team a turn. Continue playing until one team has filled three spaces in a row (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) with their letters or until every space on the board has been filled. If there are still kids who haven’t had a turn, play another round
  • Question: How do you think your life would be different if you called out to Jesus with ALL of your fears? What would happen if you never called out to Jesus with your fears?

+ Wear a Prayer (Prayer Activity)

  • Directions: Give every kid in your group a Tyvek® wristband and some markers. Tell the kids to spend a few minutes writing their name on the wristband and decorating it however they would like. When time is up, have the kids place their wristbands in a bag or hat. Next, have the kids take turns pulling a wristband out of the bag or hat without looking and read the name aloud. If they happen to pull out their own wristband, have them put it back and draw again. When a name is pulled out, have that person share a prayer request. Everyone should listen carefully to the request, but encourage the person who drew that name to pay special attention. The person who drew the name will wear the wristband over the coming week and pray for that person every time they see it. Continue taking turns until all of the wristbands have been drawn. Finish by closing in a group prayer.
