OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS:

  1. What is your favorite part of this Bible lesson?

  2. When Paul was bitten by a venomous snake, he should have been hurt. Who do you think protected him?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Play Dough Snake

  • Supplies: Play dough
  • Directions: Give each child a small piece of play dough and tell them to roll it into a snake. When the children are finished making their own snake, encourage them to link the snakes together to make one giant, long snake.
  • Say: Whoa—this is a really long snake! But our snake is made of play dough. In today’s true Bible story, there’s a real snake that bites someone. We’ll hear the story in just a little bit and we’ll learn that Jesus is with us when we’re hurt.
  • Question: Have you ever seen a snake? Tell us about it.

+ Snakes and Ladders (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Game Board and game piece (1 per group), dice (1 per group)(from the downloadedable materials)
  • Preparation: Cut the Topher Game piece out from the bottom corner of the game board
  • Say: Today we learned that Jesus is with us when we’re hurt. Let’s play a game that helps us remember that.
  • Directions: Have the children sit in a circle and place the game board in the middle. Place the Topher the Gopher game piece at the beginning of the path. Have the children take turns rolling the dice. Before each child rolls, though, have them share about a time they got hurt. After each roll, move Topher accordingly. If Topher lands at the bottom of a ladder, he can take a shortcut to the top of the ladder. If Topher lands on the tip of the snake’s tail, he will slide down to its head. Whenever that happens, lead the children in saying, “Jesus is with me when I’m hurt.” Continue playing until Topher makes it to the end.

+ Pin the Band Aid (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Topher poster (1 per group), Band-Aids (1 per child), blindfold (1 per group)
  • Preparation: Print the Topher poster on 4 sheets of paper. Tape the sheets of paper onto the wall at about eye-level for a child so it forms a picture of Topher the Gopher.
  • Say: In today’s true Bible story, Paul was bitten by a snake. But Jesus was with him when he got hurt. Let’s play a game where we help Topher and remember that just like Paul, Jesus is with us when we’re hurt.
  • Directions: This game plays just like “Pin the Tail on the Donkey.” One at a time, blindfold each child (or have them close their eyes), give them a Band-Aid with the paper backing removed, and face them toward the Topher poster. The child must slowly walk toward the poster and stick their Band-Aid anywhere on Topher’s body. When the Band-Aid has been applied, lead all the children in cheering and saying, “Jesus is with me when I’m hurt.” Continue playing until everyone has had a turn. When finished, sit down with the children and ask the question below.
  • Question: When you get hurt, you can pray to Jesus. What would you say to Jesus when you’re hurting?

+ Hot Potato (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Ball, music player
  • Today's Bible Verse: “And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end.” Matthew 28:20
  • Directions: Sit in a circle and practice the Bible verse together until the children can remember it. When ready, begin passing the ball around the circle while playing music. When you stop the music, the children must stop passing the ball. If the child holding the ball is a girl, lead all the girls in saying the Bible verse together. If the child holding the ball is a boy, lead all the boys in saying the Bible verse together. Continue playing for as long as time and interest allow.

+ Paper People Party (Bible Story Review Activity)

  • Supplies: Story Character Cards
  • Directions: Give each child a set of Story Cutout Characters. There will be a cutout for each of the main characters from the story. Ask the children what happened first in today’s Bible story. After sharing, ask them what happened next. As the children retell the story, encourage them to move the cutout characters as if they were reenacting the story with play people. Continue until the children have retold the entire Bible story.

+ My Parents (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of their mom and/or dad. When finished, ask the children to show their picture and to talk about it.
  • Say: One of the ways Jesus helps us when we’re hurt is by giving us mommies and daddies who take care of us. Let’s say a prayer and thank Jesus for giving us our mommies and daddies.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by thanking Jesus for all of the children’s parents as well as your own.

+ Coloring Sheet (GO! Deeper Activity)

  • Supplies: Bible story coloring sheet, markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a Bible story coloring sheet and some crayons or markers. While the children are coloring, give them a snack to eat and ask the following questions to help them go deeper into the story.
  • Question: When Paul was bitten by a venomous snake, he should have been hurt. Who do you think protected him?
  • Question: Paul healed the sick people with the power of Jesus. How do you think Jesus can help you when you’re feeling sick?

(Due to copyright restrictions, the printable materials described in the activities above are only available to those who have registered for Our Savior’s Kids. To register your child(ren), click the button below)

Once guessed, lead the group in saying the short prayer below for that child. Continue until all of the children have been selected and prayed for.
  • Prayer: “Dear Jesus, please help __ love and follow you. Amen.”

+ Sleeping Guards (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Say: In today’s true Bible story, Jesus answered the people’s prayer by sending an angel to rescue Peter from jail. Let’s play a game that helps us remember that we can pray for other people too.
  • Directions: Tell the children that they are the guards from the Bible story and you are the angel. Have the children lay on the floor and pretend to be sleeping. They must keep their eyes closed tightly. If the angel taps them, they get to be Peter. (Tell them you will only tap them if their eyes are completely closed.) Peter must stand up very quietly and sneak away with the angel. Direct Peter to stand behind you or something in the room so they are out of sight of the guards, then say, “Wake up, guards!” The guards must then sit up and guess which child is Peter by looking to see who is missing. Once the children guess correctly, have everyone say, “I can pray for others,” before going back to sleep. Continue playing rounds until all of the children have been Peter. When finished, ask the question below.
  • Question: Do you know someone who is sick, sad, or hurt? Let’s say a prayer for them. (After each answer, say a very short prayer for that person.)

+ Hot Potato (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Ball, music player
  • Today's Bible Verse: “Pray for one another so that you might be healed.” James 5:16

+ My Family (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of their family. When finished, ask the children to show their picture and to share about their family.
  • Say: Today we learned that we can pray for others. We can pray for our families. Let’s say a prayer right now. We can tell God about our family and ask Him to help them.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by asking God to help your family as well as the families of the children.

  • Question: If you were one of Peter’s church friends, would you have been surprised when Peter knocked on the door? Why or why not?
  • Question: Peter’s church friends prayed for him. Who are your friends at church? How could you pray for them?

+ Green Light Go

  • Supplies: None
  • Directions: Have all of the children line up against one wall. Tell them they have to get to the opposite wall in whatever way you tell them to, but they can only move when you say “Green Light…GO!” When you say, “Red Light…STOP!” they must all stop immediately. Use the list below for ideas on methods of movement, but feel free to make up your own as well. When the children reach the opposite wall, they must shout, “Jesus loves you!”
  • Methods of Movement:
    • Walk
    • Run
    • Skip
    • Hop on two feet
    • Crawl
    • Crab walk
    • Bear crawl
    • Hop on one foot
    • Twirl
  • Say: Jesus ALWAYS gives us the green light to tell others about Him. He says, “GO! into all the world. Preach the good news to everyone!” Preach means to tell. It doesn’t matter how we go—we can walk, run, skip, or crawl. But when we get there, we can tell everyone about Jesus.

  • Directions: Choose one child to be the jailer and one child to be the angel. The other children will be the disciples. Tell the disciples to dance, wiggle, or walk around while saying, “I can tell everyone about Jesus!” When the jailer tags them, they must freeze in place and be quiet, but when the angel tags them, they’re free to move and talk again. Give the children direction when needed. After a little bit, choose new children to be the jailer and angel. Continue playing for as long as time and interest allow, then sit down and ask the question below.
  • Question: Who could you tell about Jesus? What would you say to them?

+ Telefriend (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Directions: Have the children sit with you in a circle. Begin by whispering one of the phrases below to the child on your right. Tell that child to then whisper the same phrase to their neighbor. Continue around the circle until the phrase reaches the last child in the circle. The last child must then say the phrase out loud so everyone can hear it. The phrase should only be whispered once by each child, so players must pay close attention. If the phrase has changed, tell the children what the phrase started as. Continue until all four phrases have been used.
  • Phrases:
    • Jesus died and now He’s alive.
    • Jesus loves you.
    • Jesus wants you to follow Him.
    • Jesus is your forever friend.
  • Say: In our true Bible story for today, the disciples told everyone the good news about Jesus. We can tell our friends and family the good news too, but we don’t have to whisper it. We can say it loud enough for everyone to hear! Let’s practice. (Invite the children to loudly repeat the above phrases with you one at a time.)
  • Question: What are some other things you can tell people about Jesus?

+ Kangaroo Bible Club (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Masking or painters tape (1 roll)

April 11, 2021 - Lesson 4: Jesus is Alive!

Maisy Easter Surprise_Logo.png

Big Idea: Jesus takes my sin away.

Bible Basis: Matthew 27:32−28:10

Key Verse: “But you know (point to head) that Christ (extend arms like a cross) came to take our sins away (brush hands together like wiping them clean).” 1 John 3:5 (extend hands like holding a book).

  2. When Jesus died and rose again, he took away all of our sins. How does that make you feel? Why do you feel that way?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Happy Easter

  • Supplies: Cellphone Printout cards
  • Directions: Give each child a Cellphone Printout card. Ask the children who they want to call and tell, “Happy Easter.” After each answer, pretend to dial the phone with the children. Make “beep” and “boop” sounds while dialing. Next, hold the phone to your ear with the children and say (for example), “Hello mommies! The children want to tell you…” then prompt the children to say into their phone, “Happy Easter!” Hang up, then repeat for another person. Continue calling as many people as you can think of.
  • Say: Easter is such a special day! Do you know why? (Allow children to answer.) That’s right—Easter is the day we celebrate that Jesus died on the cross, but now He is alive!
  • Question: How do you celebrate Easter at your house?

+ Shout It Out (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Piece of paper, tape, markers, crayons, stickers, etc.
  • Say: On Easter, we celebrate the best news ever—Jesus died, but now He is alive. Let’s make some megaphones, then we can practice shouting to the world that Jesus is alive.
  • Directions: Give each child a piece of paper and tell them to draw and color a praise picture for Jesus. It can be anything that shows Jesus they love Him. You can also encourage them to draw a picture of the Easter story. When finished, help the children roll the paper into a megaphone shape (with the drawing on the outside) and tape it in place. Next, ask the children who they would like to tell that Jesus is alive. After each suggestion, have the children shout together through their megaphone (for example) “Hey mommy! Jesus is alive!” Repeat this for each answer. For added fun, ask the children what kind of voice they would like to say it in (robot, lion, giant, etc.), then say it in that voice.

+ It's A Match (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: “Easter Egg Matching Guide”, plastic Easter eggs, rice, coins, paper clips, jelly beans, Legos
  • Preparation: Fill 5 different Easter eggs halfway full with the following: rice, coins, paper clips, jelly beans, and Legos. Leave the 6th egg empty. Print the “Easter Egg Matching Guide” on paper.
  • Directions: Seat the children in a circle and place the “Easter Egg Matching Guide” in the middle of the group. Tell the children that each of the items on the guide is in one of the 6 Easter eggs. Choose one egg at a time and pass it around the group. Encourage the children to shake the egg and guess which of the items is inside. After everyone has guessed, open the egg and show them if they’re right. Save the empty Easter egg for last.
  • Say: Our last Easter egg was empty (hold up empty egg and shake it). The empty egg reminds us of the empty tomb in our Bible story. When the women went to the tomb where Jesus was buried, it was empty. That’s because Jesus died, but now He is alive!
  • Question: When Jesus died and rose again, he took away all of our sins. How does that make you feel? Why do you feel that way?

+ Animal Party (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Picture Dice
  • Today's Bible Verse: “But you know (point to head) that Christ (extend arms like a cross) came to take our sins away (brush hands together like wiping them clean).” 1 John 3:5 (extend hands like holding a book).
  • Directions: Practice the Bible verse together until the children can remember it. When ready, choose a child to roll the picture dice, then have all of the children say the Bible verse like they are the animal that is face-up on the dice. If the dice lands on Topher the Gopher, have all of the children say the verse with buck teeth like a gopher. Continue playing until all of the children have had a turn rolling the dice.

+ Maisy Has a Message (Bible Story Review Activity)

  • Supplies: Maisy the Mailbox, Maisy Question Cards, envelopes (4)
  • Preparation: Print the “Maisy Question Cards” on 8½ x 11 cardstock paper and cut apart. Place each card in a separate envelope. If you have multiple small groups, you might want to use different colored envelopes for each small group.
  • Directions: Lead your group in shouting, “Maisy has a message!” then send one or two children to open Maisy the Mailbox and retrieve one envelope. Take the question card out of the envelope and read the story review question to the children. After they have answered the question, repeat the above instructions until all 4 messages have been retrieved.

+ I Love Jesus (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw and color a picture of a heart. While they’re drawing, ask them what they love about Jesus.
  • Say: We love Jesus, and Jesus loves us! In fact, Jesus loves us so much that He died on a cross for us. But Jesus didn’t stay dead. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead. That’s the good news of Easter—Jesus is alive! Let’s say a prayer and tell Jesus what we love about Him.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, tell Jesus what you love about Him, then thank Him for dying on the cross for you.

  2. If you were Peter, what would you have done when the people asked you, “Are you with Jesus?” Why would you do that?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Popsicle Stick Cross

  • Supplies: Popsicle sticks, glue or yarn, markers or other decorative supplies
  • Preparation: Ahead of time, break or cut some of the popsicle sticks in half with scissors. Each child should have 1½ popsicle sticks.
  • Directions: Give each child one full popsicle stick and one half popsicle stick. Have them create a cross by gluing or binding the sticks together with yarn. When finished, encourage them to color or decorate their cross however they would like.
  • Say: This shape is called a cross. Jesus died on a cross that was shaped like this. When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, he took away all of our sins.
  • Question: Why do you think Jesus died on a cross? How does it make you feel to know that Jesus died on a cross?

+ Disappearing Sin (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Coffee filters, washable markers, eye dropper, cup of water
  • Directions: Give each child a coffee filter and some washable markers. Ask the children to tell you about something bad they have said or done. After sharing, tell the children to draw a sad face on the coffee filter.
  • Say: When we do or say bad things, that’s called sin. Sin makes God sad. But Jesus died on the cross and rose again so our sins could be forgiven. When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins, look at what happens. The sin is washed away!
  • Directions: Allow the children to take turns sucking up water with the eye dropper and dripping it onto their sad face. The sad faces will slowly wash away and disappear.

+ Cross Colors (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Paper plate, masking or painters tape, water color paints, markers, or other artistic medium
  • Preparation: For each child, use tape to create the shape of a cross on the center of a paper plate.
  • Say: In today’s true Bible story, Jesus was arrested for saying He was the Son of God. Even though it’s true, Jesus was put on a cross and died. When Jesus died and rose again, He took our sins away. Let’s make a cross that helps us remember the amazing thing Jesus did for us.
  • Directions: Give each child a paper plate. The center of each plate should have tape on it in the shape of a cross. Encourage the children to use water color paints, markers, or any other artistic medium to color over and around the tape cross. While the children are creating, ask them the question below. When finished, after the paint or marker has dried, help the children remove the tape so they can clearly see the cross in the middle of their masterpiece.
  • Question: Jesus died for you on a cross like this. When He died and rose again, He washed away all of your sins. How does that make you feel? What do you want to say to Jesus?

+ Please Forgive Me (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of Jesus on the cross. While they’re drawing, ask them what kind of bad things they’ve said or done that they want Jesus to forgive them for.
  • Say: When Jesus died on the cross, He took away all of our sins. Let’s say a prayer and tell Jesus about some of the bad things we’ve said or done. We can ask Jesus to forgive us for those sins.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, ask Jesus to forgive the children for the sins they talked about.

  • Question: When the people asked Peter if he was with Jesus, Peter said, “I don’t know Him.” Why do you think Peter did that?
  • Question: If you were Peter, what would you have done when the people asked you, “Are you with Jesus?” Why would you do that?

After a moment, tell the children to praise Jesus with their hands, then continue dancing while shaking your hands. Continue shaking the various parts of your body listed below until the song is over.
  • Body Parts: Hands, head, feet, elbows, knees, nose, everything (whole body)

  • Question: What are some ways we can praise Jesus?

+ Giddy Up (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Say: In today’s true Bible story, Jesus rode a donkey through a parade while people shouted praises to Him. Let’s play a donkey riding game that helps us remember that we can praise King Jesus.
  • Directions: Have the children stand on one side of the room. Tell the children they’re going to ride their “donkey” to the other side of the room. Have the children get on their pretend donkey. When you say “Giddy up,” have the children gallop toward the other side. When you say, “Whoa donkey!” have the children stop (similar to “Red Light, Green Light”). Alternate between “Giddy up” and “Whoa donkey” until you reach the other side of the room. When all of the kids have arrived, lead them in shouting, “I can praise King Jesus!” Repeat the above instructions and travel back and forth across the room for as long as time and interest allows. Option A: When finished, lead the children in marching around the room while waving their palm branches and shouting, “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Option B: Have the children form 2 lines facing each other with about 4 feet in-between. Allow the children to take turns walking through the middle while the other children wave their palm branches and shout, “Hosanna! Hosanna! In the highest heaven!”
  • Question: If you were at a parade for Jesus, what would you shout?

March 7, 2021 - Lesson 5: Lazarus is Alive!

Mixed Up Max_Logo.png

Big Idea: I can ask Jesus for help.

Bible Basis: John 11:1-44

Key Verse: “[God] (point up) is always there to help us (clasp your hands together) in times of trouble (rock like you’re on a stormy sea).” Psalm 46:1 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

  2. Who do you think made Lazarus come back to life? Why do you think that?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Let's Wrap

  • Supplies: tiolet paper
  • Directions: Choose a child to be “Lazarus.” Help the other children wrap Lazarus in toilet paper, then have Lazarus lie down on the floor. Have the other children count to 3, then shout, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus must then stand up and tear off the toilet paper. Continue playing until all of the children have had a turn being Lazarus.
  • Say: Today’s true Bible story is all about a man named Lazarus. He wasn’t wrapped in toilet paper, though, he was wrapped in strips of burial cloth. That’s because Lazarus was dead. But he didn’t stay dead. We’re going to find out why in just a little bit and we’re going to learn that we can ask Jesus for help.
  • Question: Who do you think made Lazarus come back to life? Why do you think that?

+ Out of the Tomb

  • Supplies: Bed sheet or blanket
  • Say: In our Bible story for today, Lazarus was dead and buried in a tomb, but then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” Right then, Lazarus came back to life. Let’s play a game that helps us remember that story.
  • Directions: Tell the children they are going to take turns pretending to be Lazarus in the tomb. Choose a child to go first. Have them sit or lie on the floor, then cover them with the sheet. On the count of 3, have the other children shout, “Lazarus, come out!” Upon hearing the words, Lazarus must stand up and throw the sheet off. When the child emerges, ask them the question below. Continue playing until all of the children have had a turn being Lazarus.
  • Question: Why do you think Jesus is so special

+ Gotcha (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None

  • Directions: Have the children lay on the floor and pretend to be Lazarus in the tomb. If you shout, “Lazarus, come out!” the children must race to jump up and shout, “I can ask Jesus for help!” If you yell anything else, the children must stay still and shouldn’t move a muscle. If any children move when they’re not supposed to, say to them “Gotcha!” To make it more challenging, shout things that sound similar to “Lazarus, come out!” See the list below for examples. Alternate between saying the right words and the wrong words.

    • Lazarus, let’s shout!
    • Cornelius, come out!
    • Lazarus, eat trout!
    • Lazarus, no doubt!
    • Lazarus, bean sprout!
    • Alexis, come out!
    • Lazarus, don’t pout!
    • Lazarus, look out!
  • Say: In our story for today, Lazarus wasn’t just asleep, he was dead. But when Jesus said, “Lazarus, come out!” he came back to life and hopped to his feet. Jesus helped Lazarus and He can help us too.
  • Question: Jesus can do anything! How do you think Jesus could help you with His power?

+ Lava Leapers (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Rope or yarn (2 pieces per group)
  • Today's Bible Verse: God (point up) is always there to help us (clasp your hands together) in times of trouble (rock like you’re on a stormy sea).” Psalm 46:1 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).
  • Directions: Practice the Bible verse together until the children can remember it. When ready, lay the two pieces of rope on the floor parallel to one another with about 6 inches in-between. Tell the children to imagine the space between the ropes is a river of hot lava. Have the children line up along one side of the lava. As a group, recite the verse together, then leap over the lava. If the children land in the lava, they can pretend to sink into it. Next, move one of the ropes 6 inches further away so the river is wider, then repeat. Keep moving the rope 6 inches each time until the children can no longer jump across. If time and interest allow, play again from the beginning.

+ Wiggle Freeze (Bible Story Review Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Directions: Tell the children that when you say, “Wiggle,” they can move and wiggle in whatever way they want, but when you say, “Freeze,” they have to stop and remain totally still until someone is caught moving. Begin by repeatedly saying “Wiggle” for as long as you would like, then say “Freeze!” The children will freeze in place. Watch closely to see which child moves first. Whichever child moves first, ask that child what happened first in today’s Bible story. (They don’t have to tell the whole story, just the first part.) If necessary, allow the other children to help. When finished, begin saying “Wiggle” again and repeat the above instructions. For each additional round, ask the child who moves first to tell what happened next in the story. Continue playing until the whole story has been told.

+ Pray for the Sick (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of a sick person. While the children are drawing, ask them if they know someone who is sick.
  • Say: Jesus is so, so powerful. He helped Lazarus get better and He can help us get better too. Whenever you or someone you know is sick, you can pray to Jesus and ask Him to help that person get better. In fact, let’s do that right now.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by asking Jesus to help the sick people that the children talked about.

  • Question: What do you think it was like for Lazarus to be dead, then alive again?
  • Question: What was your favorite part of today’s story? Why was that your favorite?

(Due to copyright restrictions, the printable materials described in the activities above are only available to those who have registered for Our Savior’s Kids. To register your child(ren), click the button below)

February 28, 2021 - Lesson 4: Blind Bartamaeus

Mixed Up Max_Logo.png

Big Idea: I can ask Jesus for help.

Bible Basis: Mark 10:46-52

Key Verse: “[God] (point up) is always there to help us (clasp your hands together) in times of trouble (rock like you’re on a stormy sea).” Psalm 46:1 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

  2. What kind of problems do you think Jesus could help you with?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Blind Builders

  • Supplies: building blocks, blindfold
  • Directions: First, have the children build a simple block tower by stacking the blocks up. Next, place a blindfold on the children and challenge them to do it again, this time without being able to see. If there are more children than blindfolds, encourage the children to take turns.
  • Question: What was it like building a block tower when you couldn’t see?
  • Say: It’s hard to do things when you can’t see. Today’s true Bible story is about a man who was blind. That means his eyes didn’t work and he couldn’t see—even when his eyes were open. But then, Jesus did something amazing. We’ll find out what Jesus did during the story and we’ll learn that we can ask Jesus for help.

+ I Spy

  • Supplies: Emoji pictures
  • Preparation: Ahead of time, print the “Emoji Pictures” on paper and tape them around the room in various locations
  • Say: IIn today’s true Bible story, Bartimaeus was blind—he couldn’t spy anything with his eyes! But then Jesus helped him see again. We’re going to play a game of “I Spy” that helps us think of times we can ask Jesus for help.
  • Directions: Play a game of “I Spy” with the children. You can spy anything in the room, but periodically spy one of the printed emoji faces that are taped around the room. For example, say, “I spy with my little eye, a sad face.” Allow the children to look until they find it. Whenever the children find one of the emoji faces, ask the children how Jesus can help them when they feel that way. Take answers, then continue playing. Play until all of the faces have been found.

+ We All Fall Down (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Say: In today’s true Bible story, Bartimaeus asked Jesus for help. What did Bartimaeus need help with? (Allow children to answer.) That’s right—he couldn’t see. Let’s play a game that helps us remember we can ask Jesus for help too.
  • Directions: Direct the children to stand in a circle while holding hands. Next, have the children walk in a circle while singing the song below to the tune of “Ring around the Rosie.” On the last line of the song, the children must fall down to the ground. While sitting down, ask the children what they need Jesus’ help with. After one child has answered, stand back up and repeat. Continue until all of the children have had a turn answering.
  • Song:
    • Jesus, can you help me. Bartimaeus can’t see. Help me. Help me. We all fall down.

+ Help, I'm Sad (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of a sad face. When finished, ask the children to show their picture and to tell everyone about something that makes them feel sad.
  • Say: Today we learned that Jesus can help us with anything. Even when we feel sad, we can pray to Jesus and ask Him to help us. That’s what we’re going to do right now.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by telling Jesus about the things mentioned by the children. Ask Jesus to help the children when they feel sad.

February 21, 2021 - Lesson 3: Be Quiet Storm!

Mixed Up Max_Logo.png

Big Idea: I can ask Jesus for help.

Bible Basis: Mark 4:35-41

Key Verse: “[God] (point up) is always there to help us (clasp your hands together) in times of trouble (rock like you’re on a stormy sea).” Psalm 46:1 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

  2. In today’s story, we learned that Jesus has the power to stop storms. What else do you think Jesus has the power to do?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Freeze Dance

  • Supplies: music player, worship song
  • Directions: Play a high-energy praise song. While the music plays, dance and wiggle with the children. At various points throughout the song, shout “Quiet! Be still!” then pause the music. When the music is paused, everyone must freeze and stay as still as possible until the music plays again. Un-pause the music and continue dancing. Repeat until the song is all finished.
  • Say: That was so much fun! In today’s true Bible story, Jesus shouted “Quiet! Be still!” But He didn’t stop a dance party—He stopped something much bigger. We’re going to find out what it was and learn that we can ask Jesus for help.
  • Question: Have you ever been on a boat? What was it like?

+ Storm Stoppers

  • Supplies: bed sheet, beach ball or something similar
  • Say: In our Bible story for today, there was a big storm that tossed and turned the disciples’ boat. But then Jesus said, “Quiet! Be still!” and the waves became calm again. We’re going to play a game that reminds us of how Jesus stopped the storm.
  • Directions: Spread the bedsheet on the floor. Have the children stand around the sheet, then pick it up by the edge and pull it somewhat taut. Toss a ball into the middle of the sheet. Tell the children to imagine that the sheet is the lake and the ball is the boat. Have the children shake the sheet so the ball tosses and turns. Begin gently, but then slowly work your way to shaking the sheet more vigorously. When you say, “Quiet! Be still!” have the children freeze in place. As a group, say, “I can ask Jesus for help.” Then begin gradually shaking the sheet again. Continue for as long as the children remain interested. When finished, have the children sit down and answer the following question.
  • Question: What do you need Jesus to help you with?

+ Bop It (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: Inflated balloon, “Sick, Sad, and Scared Face” printout
  • Preparation: Inflate a balloon and tie it off. Print the sick, sad, and scared faces on 8½ x 11 paper, then cut them out and tape them to the balloon. Try to spread the pictures out as much as possible.
  • Say: During today’s true Bible story, we learned that we can ask Jesus for help. We’re going to play a fun game that helps us think about ways that Jesus can help us.
  • Directions: Have the children stand in a cluster. Throw the inflated balloon above the children and tell them to continually bop it into the air while singing the first verse to “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know.” When the verse is over, tell the children to catch the balloon. Have the child who catches the balloon look to see which picture their hand is touching (or closest to touching), then ask them to answer the corresponding question below. Repeat until all of the children have had a turn answering. If a child catches the balloon a second time, they can hand it to someone who hasn’t caught it yet.
  • Questions:
    • Sick face: How can Jesus help you when you’re sick?
    • Sad face: How can Jesus help you when you’re sad?
    • Scared face: How can Jesus help you when you’re scared?

+ Help, I'm Scared (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of a scared face. When finished, ask the children to show their picture and to tell everyone about something that scares them.
  • Say: Today we learned that we don’t have to fight our fear alone. That’s because Jesus helps us when we’re scared. When we feel afraid, we can pray to Jesus and ask Him to help us. That’s what we’re going to do right now.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by asking Jesus to help the children in your group be brave when something scary happens. Pray for the specific situations that were shared by the children. Thank Jesus for helping you when you’re scared.

  • Question: If Jesus was with you during a big storm, would you be scared like the disciples? Why or why not?
  • Question: In today’s story, we learned that Jesus has the power to stop storms. What else do you think Jesus has the power to do?

February 14, 2021 - Lesson 2: The Lost Sheep

Mixed Up Max_Logo.png

Big Idea: I belong to Jesus.

Bible Basis: John 10:1-16

Key Verse: “At one time (hold up one finger) you were far away from God (march in place). But now you belong (hug yourself) to Christ Jesus (hold arms out like a cross).” Ephesians 2:13 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

  2. The Good Shepherd takes care of His sheep. How do you think Jesus takes care of you?

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Choose one (or more) of these activities to do with your child.

+ Follow the Shepherd

  • Supplies: None
  • Directions: Tell the children that you are the shepherd and they are the sheep. Wherever the shepherd goes, the sheep must follow. Begin by moving slowly around the area while the sheep follow you. Create variety by moving faster, slower, in zig zag patterns, in tight circles, etc. After a while, allow the children to take turns being the shepherd and continue the game.
  • Say: Wow! You all did such a great job following the shepherd. Today’s true Bible story is about a Good Shepherd who loves His sheep so much. The sheep go where the shepherd goes and they do what the shepherd says. In just a little bit, we’re going to learn who the shepherd is.
  • Question: Have you ever pet a sheep before? If you have, what was it like? If not, what do you think their wool feels like?

+ Sheep Herders

  • Supplies: Cotton balls, marker, shoe box, wolf cards
  • Directions: Give each child a cotton ball and a marker. (Tell the children not to remove the cap from their marker.) Next, place the shoebox on its side on the floor against a wall. Tell the children to imagine they are a good shepherd. The marker is their shepherd’s staff, the cotton ball is their sheep, and the shoebox is the sheep’s pen. Have the children place their cotton ball on the floor about 8 feet from the shoe box, then have them begin herding their sheep toward the pen using their shepherd’s staff. As the children get close to the pen, lay some wolf cards on the floor. The children must herd their sheep around the wolves. When all of the sheep are in the pen, celebrate, then play another round.
  • Say: That game reminds us of today’s true Bible story. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who loves and cares for His sheep. We’re kind of like the sheep. Jesus leads us in the right direction and keeps us out of trouble.
  • Question: How do you think Jesus cares for you and protects you like a Good Shepherd?

+ Shepherd's Voice (Application Activity)

  • Supplies: None
  • Say: In today’s Bible story, Jesus said He is like a Good Shepherd and we’re like His sheep. We belong to Jesus. But the sheep have to know the Good Shepherd’s voice. Let’s play a game that helps us learn the difference between the Good Shepherd’s voice and the Stranger’s voice.
  • Directions: Tell the children to pretend like they are the sheep. Stand near a wall, then read the statements from below one at a time. If the statement is something Jesus would say, the sheep must run to the shepherd and say, “I belong to Jesus!” If the statement is something Jesus would NOT say, the sheep should run away to the opposite wall. Continue until all of the statements have been read.
  • Statements:
    • You should love God with your whole heart. (Shepherd)
    • It’s okay to steal little things. (Stranger)
    • Listen to your parents and do what they say. (Shepherd)
    • If someone is in your way, you can push them. (Stranger)
    • You should treat people the same way you want to be treated. (Shepherd)
    • You should be mean to people who are mean to you. (Stranger)
    • You should love people even if they are mean to you. (Shepherd)
    • Don’t be worried about anything. God will take care of you. (Shepherd)
    • Get as much stuff as you can and don’t share with anyone. (Stranger)
    • You should love your neighbors as much as you love yourself. (Shepherd)

+ Lava Leapers (Bible Memorization Activity)

  • Supplies: Rope or yarn (2 pieces per group)
  • Today's Bible Verse: “At one time (hold up one finger) you were far away from God (march in place). But now you belong (hug yourself) to Christ Jesus (hold arms out like a cross).” Ephesians 2:13 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

When finished, begin saying “Wiggle” again and repeat the above instructions. For each additional round, ask the child who moves first to tell what happened next in the story. Continue playing until the whole story has been told.

+ My Family (Response to God Activity)

  • Supplies: GO! Home Guide (1 per child), markers or crayons
  • Directions: Give each child a GO! Home Guide and some crayons or markers. The sheet will have a space for children to draw. Tell the children to draw a picture of their family or people who care for them. When finished, have the children show their picture and talk about their drawing.
  • Say: Today we learned that Jesus is like a Good Shepherd and we are like His sheep. One of the ways Jesus cares for us is by giving us people who care for us. Let’s say a prayer and thank Jesus for our families.
  • Prayer: Begin by asking if any of the children would like to pray. Allow any children who want to pray the opportunity to do so. When they’re finished, close the prayer by thanking Jesus for your family and for all the families of the child.
