Elementary - Lesson 3: Jesus is Tempted (January 23rd, 2022)

Big Idea: Jesus said “no” to sin, and so can we.

Bible Basis: Luke 4:1-13

Key Verse: “You are tempted in the same way all other human beings are. God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted any more than you can take. But when you are tempted, God will give you a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN

Simply ask your child to share one good thing that happened today or this week (thumbs up) and one not-so-good thing (thumbs down). This is a great way to share celebrations and struggles with one another.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • What did you find interesting about this story?

    • What did Jesus do that helped Him say no to sin?

  • For older kids:

    • What do you think this story teaches us about Jesus?

    • Why do you think Jesus repeated scripture every time Satan tempted Him?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Have you given in to sin recently? We all do. Take some time to tell God about it and ask Him for forgiveness.

    • Journal Station prompt: Write about a time you said “no” to sin. What helped you say “no” to sin?

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Luke 4:1–13. Write down any questions you have after reading this. You can ask your parent or pastor about them later.

    • Art Station prompt: Today we talked about resisting temptation being kind of a like a tug-of-war game. Draw a picture of yourself playing tug-of-war with sin. On one side of the rope, draw or write something that is tempting to you. On the other side, draw a picture of yourself along with some things that can help you resist temptation.
