Elementary - Lesson 1: The Prophets Foretell of the Coming King (December 5, 2021)

 

Big Idea: God gives us hope through the promise of Jesus.

Bible Basis: 1 Kings 12:1–24; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6, 53

Key Verse: “But now Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7


OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.


THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN

Simply ask your child to share one good thing that happened today or this week (thumbs up) and one not-so-good thing (thumbs down). This is a great way to share celebrations and struggles with one another.

  • For younger kids:

    • What did you find interesting about this story?

    • Why do you think God made the Israelites wait for their Savior instead of giving it to them right away?

  • For older kids:

    • What do you think this story teaches us about God?

    • Why do you think God told the Israelites about the coming Savior ahead of time?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God praising Him for a promise He has kept in your life.

    • Journal Station prompt: Write down some of the things you think God has promised you in the Bible. Is there one of those things that you’re hoping for right now? Tell God about it.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Isaiah 53. Write down which of these prophecies reminds you the most about Jesus. Why does it remind you of Jesus?

    • Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of Jesus as a baby. Underneath it, write “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.” Isaiah 9:6.

CLOSING PRAYER

Dear God, Thank you for keeping your promises and sending a Savior. Help me to trust in you and the promises you give me in your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
