Elementary - Lesson 4: Do Not Judge Others (February 27th, 2022)

Big Idea: Jesus wants us to be pure in heart, not just pretenders.

Bible Basis: Matthew 23

Key Verse: “God, create a pure heart in me. Give me a new spirit that is faithful to you.” Psalm 51:10

OPENING PRAYER

Lord, open now my heart to hear, And through your Word to me draw near. Let me your Word ever pure retain; Let me your child and heir remain. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN

Simply ask your child to share one good thing that happened today or this week (thumbs up) and one not-so-good thing (thumbs down). This is a great way to share celebrations and struggles with one another.

BIBLE LESSON VIDEO

ASK THESE QUESTIONS

  • For younger kids:

    • Would you want to be like the Pharisees? Why or why not?

    • What do you think Jesus cares about more, looking good on the outside or being good on the inside? Why?

  • For older kids:

    • Why do you think Jesus compared the Pharisees to a tomb that is painted white on the outside?

    • Why do you think Jesus cares more about what people look like on the inside?

REFLECT AND RESPOND

  • After the video, have your child pick one or more of the prompts on the GO! Home Guide.

    • Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer to God. Ask Him to give you a clean heart so that you can be filled with His love even when no one is looking.

    • Journal Station prompt: Have you ever acted nice in front of people, but then did something mean when no one was looking? Tell God about it. Ask Him to forgive you.

    • Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: Matthew 23:23–32. Write to God your favorite part of the story. Tell Him why you liked it.

    • Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of a heart. Make it the most amazing and colorful heart ever! While you’re drawing, ask God to make your heart clean and new.
